History of A.L. Moore-Grimshaw Mortuaries Bethany Chapel
In 1904, Albert Lincoln Moore moved to the Salt River Valley, located in Tempe, Arizona, where he founded a mortuary business. In 1906, he transferred his home and business to Phoenix. Mr. Moore established A.L. Moore & Sons Mortuary at 333 West Adams Street, located in the heart of downtown Phoenix on the corner of 4th Avenue and Adams – which became known by many as the “Corner with the Garden.”

After Mr. Moore’s retirement, his sons, Albert Lee and Harold, continued their father’s legacy and A.L. Moore & Sons Mortuary stood out as one of the premier funeral homes in the State of Arizona. Eventually Albert Lee’s son, Albert Lee, Jr., followed in his family’s footsteps and continued to lead and innovate while maintaining the same level of service excellence set by previous generations. He continued to expand the business until his retirement in the mid-1980s.

In the early 1900s, Hal H. Grimshaw, an undertaker, formed the Grimshaw-Action Mortuary Company, and in 1927, founded Grimshaw Palms Chapel located at 334 West Monroe Street in downtown Phoenix. In 1961, Grimshaw Mortuary joined hands with Bethany Chapel Mortuary, located in North Central Phoenix, under the ownership of Jack Byrd, and emerged as a well-known funeral home for over 80 years.

We are proud to be the only Phoenix mortuary to have received the National Funeral Directors Association’s (NFDA) Pursuit of Excellence Award for Number One Funeral Home.

In 1997, A.L. Moore & Sons Mortuary and Grimshaw Mortuaries combined over 180 years of experience to establish A.L. Moore-Grimshaw Mortuary Bethany Chapel. Located in the North Central corridor, A.L. Moore-Grimshaw Mortuary Bethany Chapel continues to serve the entire Phoenix metropolitan area. For over 100 years, the heritage of commitment, service, dignity and honor instilled by the Moore and Grimshaw families lives on today and we continue to respond to the changing need of the community.
