History of Barbour & Son Funeral Home
Barbour & Son Funeral Home is nestled in the heart of the Tollesboro community in Lewis County, Kentucky, on the north side of State Route 10. This local, well-known funeral home is rich in history and heritage, and has been in operation for over a century with five generations of the Barbour family involved in the business.

The story began in the late 1800s when R.L. Teager operated an undertaking establishment and a casket-making business on the present site of the funeral home property in Tollesboro. It was operated by Mr. Teager until Thomas Tyler “T.T” Barbour acquired ownership. T.T. Barbour, a merchant and long-time Burtoniville, Kentucky, postmaster, had a dream of having his own funeral parlor to serve area residents in the passing of their loved ones. He became a business partner of R.L. Teager and started living his dream in 1902 when he operated a branch of the mortuary in Burtonville.

In 1925, the two mortuaries were consolidated in one location when T.T. Barbour relocated his funeral home business to Tollesboro. His son, Russell Barbour, became a licensed funeral director and embalmer in 1922 when he graduated from the Cincinnati College of Embalming. Russell became the active head of the business, then known as T.T. Barbour & Son Funeral Home. T.T died in 1956.

In 1943, Omar Hamlin joined the operation, which then became known as the Barbour-Hamlin Funeral Home. In 1947, Mr. Hamlin disposed of his one-half interest to Chelsea Merritt. In 1952, Mr. Hamlin returned to the partnership and it was renamed Barbour, Merritt, and Hamlin Funeral Home.

In March 1961, Mr. Hamlin sold his interest to Leonard Russell Barbour and his son, Thomas Barbour, who had graduated from Kentucky School of Embalming in Louisville in 1949. The business then became known as the Russell Barbour & Son Funeral Home. Thomas became Russell’s sole business partner in 1961, becoming the third generation of the Barbour family to be associated with the operation.

Following Russell Barbour’s passing in 1975, the firm operated under the name of Barbour & Son Funeral Home. Billy Barbour, son of Thomas, joined the staff in 1975 after studying at Morehead State University and graduating from the Cincinnati College of Mortuary Science, becoming the fourth generation to carry on the family business tradition.

Through the years, the well-respected Barbour family has touched the lives of area residents as they comforted and served the people at their most critical time of need. The funeral home has enjoyed a sound prestige of unexcelled professional and caring service on a personalized basis. As most folks in the community say, “You can go anywhere for a funeral, but if you want a true service, go to Barbour & Son Funeral Home.”

Current employees of the funeral home have more than 100 years of cumulative experience to serve the area families.
