In 1935, Kenneth Bateman began his work in funeral service in Portland, Oregon. In 1950, he and his wife, Rita, moved to Gresham and began Bateman Funeral Chapel on Main Street. On February 20, 1958, the Gresham Outlook newspaper announced the opening of "The New Bateman Funeral Chapel." The newly constructed building was ready to serve the community.
In 1980, Mr. Bateman sold the business to Stanley Morris. The Morris family purchased Carroll's Funeral Home in 1986, and two years later the two funeral homes merged into one location on Powell, becoming Bateman Carroll Funeral Chapel. In the mid-1990's, Stanley Morris sold his interest in the funeral home.
