History of Bauer Funeral Chapel

In 1884, the first funeral home in the small city of Snohomish was established by Charles H. Bakeman. Serving the pioneer families of that rugged time resulted in many funerals being paid for with eggs, goats, chickens and other forms of barter.

A.C. White bought the funeral home in 1929, and changed the name to Bakeman-White Funeral Home. The current funeral home was built in 1935 at the corner of First and Maple out of recycled materials and lumber from other buildings on First Street and under the influence of an Episcopal priest. Its brick walls, vaulted ceilings with exposed beams and leaded stained glass windows still reflect our small-town atmosphere today.

In 1954, Gerald and Rhoda Bauer purchased the business and renamed it Bakeman-Bauer Funeral Chapel. The Bauer family was very active in the community and built a rock solid reputation for trustworthiness and integrity that still stands today. They also started an ambulance service out of the location in 1958, which they operated until 1975. In the mid- 1980s, the name of the business was shortened to Bauer Funeral Chapel.

In 1978 the Bauers’ eldest son Mike and his wife, Carol, purchased the funeral home and continued the outstanding tradition of caring and service that his father had established. Mike also worked tirelessly in the community and devoted long hours to the families he served, simply because “it was the right thing to do.”

Mike and Carol Bauer sold the funeral home in the fall of 1997, but remained as manager and office manager, respectively. Through an acquisition, Bauer Funeral Chapel became a proud member of the Dignity Memorial® network in 2007, thus ensuring that the same high standard of caring and professional service that the Bauer family had been known for would continue to be provided to families in the Snohomish area for years to come.

Dignity Memorial providers offer exclusive benefits, including National Transferability of Prearranged Services, the Bereavement Travel Program, the 24-Hour Compassion Helpline® and access to an acclaimed grief management library. As North America’s largest provider of funeral, cremation and cemetery services, the Dignity Memorial brand is your assurance of quality, value, caring service and exceptional customer satisfaction.
