History of Cook-Walden/Capital Parks Funeral Home

The Cook-Walden/Capital Parks legacy of service began in the late 1800s when Samuel E. Rosengren opened a downtown funeral home in the 400 block of Congress Street, serving the needs of Texas' growing capital until 1920. Charles B. Cook purchased Rosengren's business and opened an opulent three-story building located between the capitol and the governor's mansion, which quickly became the largest and most prestigious provider of funeral and ambulance services in Austin. Mr. Cook continued the tradition of providing the finest in care and service in Austin for more than 50 years.

Charles Walden purchased Cook Funeral Home in 1971, bringing 30 years of dedication and service to the business. Mr. Walden soon moved the Cook-Walden Funeral Home from 11th and Colorado avenues to North Lamar Street, where it continues to be an Austin landmark. Mr. Walden acquired two adjacent cemeteries on North I-35 and continued to expand the Cook-Walden name in 1985 with the acquisition of Davis Funeral Home in Georgetown, Young Funeral Home in Florence and with the construction of Cook-Walden/Chapel of the Hills off Route 183 and Anderson Mill Road. In 1992, Forest Oaks Funeral Home and Cemetery in the Oak Hill area became part of the Cook-Walden family.

The jewel in the Cook-Walden crown was added in 1997 with a new 17,000-square-foot funeral home facility at Capital Parks Cemetery. This spacious facility shines with the warm rustic elegance of the Texas Hill Country. The Memorial Chapel offers seating for 250 with a private family lounge and seating area. The four graciously appointed staterooms, guest lounge with an adjoining patio and fireside lounge ensure a fitting venue for any remembrance.
