Over A Century of Service in the Capitol CityThe Cook-Walden legacy of service began in the late 1800s when Samuel E. Rosengren opened a downtown funeral home in the 400 block of Congress Street, serving the needs of Texas’ growing Capitol until 1920. Charles B. Cook then purchased Rosengren’s business and opened an opulent three-story building located between the Capitol and the Governor’s Mansion. The business quickly became the largest and most prestigious provider of funeral and ambulance services in Austin. Cook continued the tradition of providing the finest in care and service in Austin for more than 50 years.
Charles Walden purchased Cook Funeral home in 1971 and brought his 30 years of dedication and service to Cook Funeral Home. Walden soon moved the funeral home from 11
th and Colorado to its new location on North Lamar Street where it continues to be an Austin landmark.
Walden soon acquired two adjacent cemeteries of North I-35 and continued to expand the Cook-Walden name in 1985 with the acquisition of Davis Funeral Home in Georgetown, Young Funeral Home in Florence and with the Construction of Cook-Walden / Chapel of the Hills off 183 and Anderson Mill Road.
In 1992, Forest Oaks Funeral Home and Cemetery in the Oak Hill area became part of the Cook-Walden family and Cook Walden joined the Dignity Memorial® family. The jewel in the Cook-Walden crown was added in 1997 with a new 17,000 square foot funeral home facility at Capital Parks Cemetery.
