Winter Safety

While children are out on winter holiday breaks, they want to enjoy the snow and play. During the winter months, many sports, such as sledding or ice skating, become popular recreational activities for kids. However, many of these activities can lead to potentially serious injuries. According to the National SAFE Kids Campaign, hospital emergency rooms treat approximately 15,000 children ages 5 to 14 for sledding injuries each year.

By taking preventative measures, you and your family can avoid serious injuries. Practice the following tips to ensure safety while enjoying winter sports:

  • Supervise children at all times.

  •  

  • If you and your child go out in the evening, make sure the area is well lit.

  •  

  • Make sure that the area your children are playing in is safe. If ice skating, make sure the ice is completely frozen. If sledding, make sure the hill is safe, free from hazards, clear and does not end in a parking lot, pond or road.
  • Encourage your child to wear a helmet and goggles.

  •  

  • Wear layered clothing to protect you and your child from injuries. Extra clothing will also provide more padding and help retain warmth.

  •  

  • Make sure your equipment is clean and fits well. Do not let scarves or mittens get caught in your equipment.

  •  

  • Never attempt to ski or skate in an area where you or your child are uncomfortable and make good judgments. Only you know what you are capable of doing.

  •  

  • Familiarize yourself with the terrain. Know if there are rocks or ditches that may be hidden in snow or dark. Inform your children of where these dangerous areas are and avoid them.
