History of Fox & Murray Funeral Home & Cremation Services
(formerly: Fox-McLellan Funeral Home & Cremation Services)
When our firm was originally established in 1913, it was operated under the basic principles of compassionate service to area families in their time of need.
The firm’s heritage brings almost 98 years of continuous service in the Ogdensburg area, first as McGillis Undertaking Parlor, then McLellan Funeral Home under the ownership of the late Archibald McLellan, followed by Dennis “Ted” McLellan, who continued the operation the funeral home for many years. In 1955 the firm was renamed Fox-McLellan Funeral Home under the ownership of the late Charles T. and Dorothy E. Fox. They operated funeral homes in Heuvelton, Lisbon and Hammond, New York. Their son, Richard, joined the firm in 1967 and purchased the business in 1979. He and his partner, Kenneth J. Cole, operated the firm until 1999 when funeral directors Richard and Sandra Fox retired. Mr. Cole retired on disability a short time later. David J. McLellan, the third generation from the McLellan family, assumed the position of licensed manager at the firm. It was that year that the firm became associated with Keystone Group.
With the retirement of the McLellans in 2005, the funeral home’s name was changed to Fox & Murray Funeral Home and is now managed by Patti Murray with her husband David working with her. Richard and Sandra Fox remain semi-retired and continue to own the property as they have for the past 56 years.
Over the years, additional services were added to the business. Today, Fox & Murray Funeral Home provides a medical transport service and a monument sales and service division along with its funeral service operation.
For many years the Fox firm was associated with the Order of the Golden Rule, an association of funeral homes whose purpose was to provide progressive methods in the ever-changing world of funeral service. In 2010 Fox & Murray Funeral Home became associated with Service Corporation International and the Dignity Memorial® network of funeral homes across North America. The staff is proud to be associated with such a fine organization that embraces high performance standards and promotes continuing education to all staff members in every location throughout the network.
