History of Hanes Lineberry Funeral Home

Ninety years ago, the late Henry L. Hanes founded the Hanes Funeral Home, then located at the corner of West Sycamore and Greene Streets. This was one of the first exclusive funeral homes in North Carolina and one of the first in Greensboro to provide motorized ambulance and funeral equipment.

For the past nine decades, Hanes-Lineberry has kept pace with the progress and development of Greensboro. Our growth has been marked with moves from the original location on West Sycamore and Greene Streets in 1919 to West Market and South Eugene Streets in 1922 to our main location at North Elm and West Fisher Streets in 1968. Additional locations on Vanstory Street and High Point Roads were built in 1966, and our Sedgefield location at 6000 High Point Road in 1994.

In 1955, Mrs. Hanes-Bell asked Al Lineberry Sr. to purchase her stock in the funeral home, and since that time, Greensboro has known the firm as Hanes-Lineberry Funeral Home. Albert S. Lineberry Sr. led the funeral home into what would become one of the largest providers of funeral services in the Greensboro area. Under his leadership, the funeral homes have expanded to include three locations and a cemetery/crematory in Greensboro, a funeral home in New Bern and a funeral home in Eden, North Carolina. Mr. Lineberry Sr. became a spokesman of funeral service and was elected president of both the NC Funeral Directors Association and the National Selected Morticians in 1964. He later served in the NC State House of Representative for several terms.

Al Lineberry Jr., along with the caring professionals at Hanes-Lineberry, are proud to uphold the tradition set by Mr. Lineberry Sr. and Mr. Hanes nearly a century ago. Al Lineberry Jr. is a leading member of the funeral service team, and has been an industry leader for years. He, along with his father and brother, Scott, are the only recipients of the Certified Funeral Service Providers in Guilford County. Mr. Lineberry Jr. has been president of the International Order of Golden Rule Funeral Directors as well as many other state, local civic, and business organizations.

Today, Hanes-Lineberry is proud to be a member of the Dignity Memorial® network of funeral, cremation and cemetery service providers. The Dignity Memorial brand is your assurance of quality, value, caring service and customer satisfaction.
