History of Hawaiian Memorial Park Cemetery

In January 1956, Maytor McKinley went to Hawaii with plans for establishing a cemetery on the island of Oahu. At that time, Paul Trousdale was developing as a new community the entire 10,000-acre Kaneohe Ranch owned by Harold Castle. Trousdale heard that McKinley was looking for property to establish a new cemetery on Oahu and contacted McKinley to arrange a meeting with Castle. In February 1956 McKinley met with Castle to discuss acquisition of some land for a cemetery.

In 1958 on Memorial Day, Hawaiian Memorial Park Cemetery was dedicated to the people of Hawaii. At that time, the park was owned and operated by Hawaiian Memorial Ltd. and Maytor McKinley was President and Chairman of the Board. A few years later, in July 1961, Hawaiian Memorial Park Ltd. was reorganized as Hawaiian Memorial Park Cemetery Association. Then in 1992, Hawaiian Memorial Park Cemetery was acquired by Service Corporation International and in 1999 it became a member of the Dignity Memorial® network, North America’s premier provider of funeral, cremation and cemetery services.

Located on Windward Oahu, the park is a beautiful garden sanctuary of 80 acres, overlooking Kaneohe Bay and commanding a panoramic view of the majestic Koolau Mountains. Hawaiian Memorial Park Cemetery is one of Hawaii’s largest memorial park, and at one point, was acclaimed on national television on the Linkletter Show as the most beautiful in the United States.

Maytor McKinley established Hawaiian Memorial Park Cemetery with a commitment to provide a high standard of service to families. Today, Hawaiian Memorial Park Cemetery continues to maintain those standards by providing families with compassionate and professional service. Everyone at Hawaiian Memorial Park Cemetery is proud to uphold this commitment to our community.
