History of H.M. Patterson & Son-Oglethorpe Hill Chapel
H.M. Patterson & Son Funeral Directors was founded in 1880 in Atlanta, Georgia. Hyatt M. Patterson dedicated his life to funeral service when he started Patterson’s Funeral Home. Through his many years of dedicated service, Mr. Patterson shaped the future of the funeral profession and became regarded as one of Georgia’s outstanding citizens.
In 1896, Mr. Patterson moved his business onto Peachtree Street near Five Points, mirroring the city’s growth in that direction. Mr. Patterson’s only son, Fred, joined his father in the business working at the Peachtree Street location for eight years before deciding to move the business in 1904 to North Forsyth Street. The new Patterson location was the first building in the south designed especially for a funeral directing business. A year later, Mr. Patterson made his son partner and, since that time, the establishment has been known as H. M. Patterson & Son.
When Mr. Patterson died in 1923, Fred inherited the business and decided to construct a funeral home on a hill, overlooking trees and the city in honor of his father and in tribute to his English-born mother. Spring Hill opened in 1928 on the corner of Spring and Tenth Street.
As Atlanta’s population continued to grow, in 1960, Fred Patterson commissioned renowned architect, Lewis “Buck” Crook to design H.M. Patterson & Son-Oglethorpe Hill Chapel near Oglethorpe University in North Atlanta. Recreating the design and function of the Spring Hill facility, H.M. Patterson & Son, Oglethorpe Hill Chapel features beautiful formal gardens, a chapel and 17th
century antique furnishings to better serve families in Buckhead, Brookhaven, Chamblee, Doraville and Dunwoody areas.
As a result of Mr. Patterson’s vision more than 120 years ago, the name H.M. Patterson & Son has been synonymous with providing families with professional, compassionate and excellent service ever since. Throughout the years as Atlanta has evolved, H.M.
