History of Johnson's Lawnhaven Memorial Gardens

Located on the southeastern edge of San Angelo, Texas, Johnson's Lawnhaven Memorial Gardens began in the late 1940s. Initially privately developed, owned and operated, in 1992 Lawnhaven came under corporate ownership and is now part of the Dignity Memorial® network of funeral, cremation and cemetery service providers.

The first interment at Lawnhaven was conducted on December 27, 1948 under the direction of San Angelo’s Cox Funeral Home. Cox Funeral Home later became the Johnson’s Funeral Home, which is our co-provider in San Angelo within the Dignity® network of providers.

As the cemetery grew in the years that followed, the grounds were developed with multiple gardens. A community mausoleum was constructed featuring 140 single crypts, 36 tandem companion crypts and 58 niches. The first entombment in our mausoleum was conducted on December 24, 1958.

Recognizing the increasing interest in cremation, Lawnhaven constructed a crematory, a columbarium with 80 niches, and a cremation garden and scattering area. Our first cremation was performed on April 6, 1999.

The cemetery contains more than 20 gardens, and more development is planned within our existing perimeter.

Two of our gardens have been dedicated to those who serve. Our Veterans Field Of Honor is a tribute to our service men and women and their spouses. Our Last Alarm Garden is specifically for members of the San Angelo Fire Department and was dedicated on September 11, 2002-- the first anniversary of the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks on our nation.

Since our beginning in 1948, we have laid to rest more than 13,600 loved ones, family, and friends of the community we’re honored to serve. We’re proud yet humble to be the providers and perpetual protectors of these hallowed grounds, where one day many more shall rest in peace. A beautifully groomed park atmosphere greets our visitors as they recall the fond memories of those loved and lost.
