History of Marrs-Jones Funeral Home
In 1915 Della and Fleming Marrs purchased J. H. McCollum’s mortuary operation in Smithville, Texas. The business underwent several location changes over the years, settling into its present site during the 1930s. Della Marrs obtained her funeral director’s and embalming degree from Ed C. Smith School of Embalming in Dallas, and upon the death of her husband, Fleming, made local history when she took over the business and became one of the first female funeral directors and embalmers in the region.

Upon Della Marrs’ retirement, Max Jones purchased the Marrs Funeral Home, its two burial associations, plus the Marrs and Dean Florist. In 1969, the Jones name was added and the firm became known as Marrs-Jones Funeral Home. In 1988, Marrs-Jones expanded their operations by adding a second location in Bastrop.

In 1991 Marrs-Jones Funeral Home and Newby Funeral Home merged and became Marrs-Jones-Newby Funeral Home in Bastrop, occupying Marrs-Jones original site at 505 Old Austin Highway. Max Jones continues to serve the families of Smithville, Bastrop and Bastrop County Texas.
