History of McCarty - Evergreen Funeral Home
The McCarty name has been synonymous with traditional funeral service in Knoxville since 1928, when McCarty Funeral Home was established by William S. McCarty, Sr.

Mr. McCarty was raised in the Inskip community and attended Central High School. He received his diploma from Nashville’s Gupton Jones School of Mortuary Science in 1926. The first location of William S. McCarty Funeral Home was 3921 McCalla Ave. A few years later Mr. McCarty purchased property at 4004 Holston Drive and moved the business to the small home located on the property.

In the mid 1950s, William S. McCarty’s son Bill, Jr. graduated from mortuary college and joined his father. Through the next 30 years, the McCarty family grew its business into one of the largest funeral providers in Knoxville. In 1986, William’s nephew, David McCarty, opened Evergreen Funeral Home at 7426 Asheville Highway.

In 2006, McCarty Funeral Home and Evergreen Funeral Home joined the Dignity Memorial network. Fred Berry, of Berry Funeral Home and Lynnhurst-Greenwood Chapel of Berry Funeral Home, took over the management of McCarty and Evergreen.

In 2007, McCarty Funeral Home on Holston Drive was closed and the business merged with Evergreen Funeral Home at 7426 Asheville Highway, creating McCarty-Evergreen Funeral Home.
