History of Merrill Grinnell Funeral Home
The family-oriented business was started by John B. Merrill in Holley, New York in 1914. His son, Roy T. Merrill, joined him, and in 1926 he purchased the Reynolds & Flintham Undertaking/Furniture business in downtown Albion. Roy became partners with his father and renamed the business J.B Merrill & Son. Roy’s sister, Erva Steele, also became involved in the business at this time. She became a licensed funeral director in 1926, one of the first women in the state to do so.

In 1955 both the Albion and Holley sites were moved to their current addresses: 39 Geddes Street in Holley and 12 Ingersoll Street in Albion. In 1957 Mr. Merrill merged with Leon Grinnell’s funeral service in Albion. They incorporated in 1958 and became Merrill-Grinnell. John B. Merrill, after working with his father and aunt, took over the business in 1977.

The funeral Home is now under the management of licensed funeral director Rebekah Karls. A native of Albion, she received her associate’s degree in mortuary science from SUNY Canton.
