History of North/Meadowlawn Funeral Home
William A. North had been a funeral director in the Tampa, Florida, area for nearly 18 years when he decided to relocate to New Port Richey, Florida. In February 1961, Mr. North opened the North Funeral Home on the corner of Lincoln and Main Street in New Port Richey. It was the first chapel of the North Funeral Homes in the upper Pinellas and Pasco counties area. Mr. North soon developed his reputation of caring for the people of his community and offering outstanding service to the families he served.
In the fall of 1963, at the request of prominent citizens, Mr. North began planning for the expansion of his business into other communities. The Tarpon Springs Chapel of the North Funeral Homes opened in the spring of 1964. By this time, with his reputation and business growing, he needed a larger facility to serve the community, so Mr. North relocated his New Port Richey Chapel into a newly erected building on Main Street on the Pitlachascotee River. It opened in the fall of 1964 and became known as the Riverside Chapel.
The West Pasco County area developed at an increasing rate. With the increase in population, Mr. North recognized the need in the community for his continued expansion. He purchased property in Holiday, on the corner of US 19 and Darlington Road in 1967. In October 1968, construction began on the North Funeral Home Holiday Chapel. In March 1969, it opened for business, serving a part of the county that had no other funeral provider in the immediate area.
In 1972, Mr. North opened his fourth building, the Hudson Chapel of the North Funeral homes, which included what was then the only crematory in Pasco County. In the late 1980s, Meadowlawn Memorial Gardens was acquired by an affiliate of Service Corporation International, and ultimately became part of the Dignity Memorial® network. The North Meadowlawn Funeral Home was constructed and opened at its present premier location in February 1993.
Today, North/Meadowlawn is the largest and, considered by many, the most beautiful facility in the West Pasco area. It features large visitation rooms, a beautiful chapel, a comprehensive sound system throughout, video projection capabilities, and a large gathering room where families can celebrate their loved one's lives with gourmet catering. We are proud to carry on Mr. North's commitment to providing excellent service and building enduring relationships with the community.
