History of Oakdale Memorial Park

Before the incorporation of Oakdale Memorial Park on July 9, 1890, several burials had occurred, the earliest of which was in 1886. The first officers, elected in November of 1890, were president R.W. Dawson and secretary J.C. Preston. At the time of incorporation, the cemetery consisted of 20 acres.

In 1900, W.Q. Custer, who owned a hardware store in Covina and also operated Custer's Mortuary, acquired controlling interest in the cemetery and operated it until 1926. In November of 1926, George B. Gordon Sr. was elected president and at the same time acquired controlling interest in the company. Through the years the cemetery purchased additional acreage contiguous to the original 20 acres. Today, the cemetery comprises 114 acres.

It is interesting to note from some of the cemetery's earliest records that the charge for digging a grave was at one time $2, and large family plots were sold for $10. In some instances there was no charge for opening the grave, as the owners of the property dug the graves themselves.

Perpetual care, now known as endowment care, originated in 1910 as a separate trust fund for the continued maintenance of the cemetery. In 1929, it became the policy of the cemetery to permit only flat markers to be used on the graves instead of the above-ground monument-type markers, making possible easier and improved care. This also gives the cemetery a park-like appearance. Mausoleums have been built for above-ground entombments and the inurnment of cremated remains. In 1949, there were four employees of the cemetery. Today the Oakdale Memorial Park and Mortuary staff is composed of 50 employees.
