Obituary of Marney C. Shaffer
Marney C. Shaffer, 88, passed through the veil from home on Thursday, April 25, 2024, surrounded by family. Born November 29, 1935 in Fort Wayne, she was the daughter of Emery and Genevieve (Compton) Applegate. She attended St. Jude Elementary and Central Catholic High School. She married Robert LaVon Shaffer on July 30, 1955, and had ten children between 1956 and 1971. In 1961, the Shaffers moved to their beloved farm, where Marney discovered her love of gardening and farming and her distaste for chasing escaped cattle down Auburn Road. In addition to her agricultural pursuits and birthing her younger six children, she sold Tupperware and assisted her husband with the bookkeeping for his electrical contracting business. In 1974, all twelve Shaffers pulled up stakes and moved to Colorado, where Marney and Bob opened health clubs in Denver and Grand Junction. Despite hardships in various business endeavors, Marney kept her family strong and never lost her love of dancing and gardening. With all of her children grown, Marney and Bob returned to Fort Wayne in 1989, and Marney embarked on an 18-year labor of love, attending over 600 births as a midwife assistant. Marney was industrious, creative with limited resources, and was notorious for her fiery spirit. Marney is survived by her 10 children, Douglas, Barbara (Geoffrey) Parker, Dana, Laura, Jeff, Joe (Deb), Jennifer (Richard) Brule, Sara, Thomas, and John; as well as 31 grandchildren, 30 great-grandchildren, and 7 great great-grandchildren. Mass of Christian Burial will be 11:00 am on Friday, May 3, 2024 at Saint Michael Catholic Church, 100 Antwerp Drive, Hicksville, Ohio 43526 with visitation one hour prior. Visitation will also be from 4:00 pm to 8:00 pm on Thursday, May 2, 2024 at C.M. Sloan & Sons Funeral Home, 1327 North Wells Street, Fort Wayne, Indiana 46808 with a rosary at 7:30 pm.
