Obituary of Sadie Harris Alexander
Sadie Louise Harris Alexander, a devoted educator and cherished member of her community, passed away peacefully on April 28, 2024, at the age of 88. Born on February 3rd, 1936 in New Bern, North Carolina, she was the beloved daughter of Sadie Mae Gaskins and Haywood Nixon Harris. Growing up alongside her brothers Denard and Bill and sister Sylvia, Sadie spent her formative years in the rural areas of coastal Carolina, where the family homestead, affectionately known as Harris Hill, became a cornerstone of her life. A proud alumna of East Carolina University, Sadie pursued her passion for education, earning a master’s degree and dedicating over four decades to teaching. Her journey in education took her across various school systems and roles, including a Newport News Elementary School, the Adult Education Center in Hampton, and as an Associate Professor at ECU. Notably, she served as both an Assistant Principal and Principal at several schools in Japan, where she met her beloved husband, Roger, with whom she shared nearly 60 years of marriage. Sadie's impact extended beyond the classroom; she was deeply engaged in her community and active in Tabernacle United Methodist Church in Poquoson, Virginia. Whether through her involvement in the Girl Scouts, steadfast support for the high school band, or her commitment to substitute teaching and Philanthropic Educational Organizations, Sadie's kindness and generosity reached many lives. She is survived by her devoted husband, Roger, her loving children Scott Alexander, Amy McCord (Harry), and Jill Ritch (Trever), and her adored grandchildren, Sophia, Brooke, and Riley. Sadie's legacy of dedication to education and service will continue to inspire all who had the privilege of knowing her. She will be deeply missed and fondly remembered by family, friends, and the countless people she touched throughout her remarkable life. A private family service will be held on Friday at Parklawn-Wood Funeral Home & Memorial Park. In lieu of flowers, the family would like you to make a donation to a charity of your choice in her honor, please.
