History of Moore Howard Chapel

The original Howard Mortuary was founded by Thomas B. and Loula M. Howard in 1917 at 1901 East Colfax (Colfax and High Street) in Denver. In 1949, the Howards built a new facility at 1201 East 17th Avenue (17th and Marion), which was named Howard’s Park Chapel.

In 1960, the Howards built their second location, Berkeley Park Chapel, at 4345 West 46th Avenue in Denver, located in the center of the Berkeley Park community. This is where our firm still resides, carrying on the same tradition and respect to area families that the Howards began in 1917. This nearly 100-year tradition is something our employees are very proud of and work to achieve every day.

There are some pieces of our history that still stand in the mortuary. Mr. Howard had the podium that is located in our funeral chapel shipped from Italy. This beautiful piece of history is used by clergy or family members for funeral or memorial services held in our chapel. The original stained glass windows located throughout the mortuary and the original wooden doors of the mortuary are still intact and being used. The stained glass windows and the wooden doors also were brought in from other countries and used at the Berkeley Park Chapel.

The Howard Mortuary at 17th and Marion was closed in 1975, and one year later, the Berkeley Park Chapel and Howards were merged into Moore Howard Mortuary, where it is currently located.
