History of Resthaven Funeral Home

Resthaven Memorial Park was established in 1929 by Shawnee residents R.E. Leavitt, Joe S. Ellis and E.M. Dickson. Resthaven Funeral Home was opened in 1979 on the northeast corner of Resthaven Memorial Park by Neill E. and Mary E. Wiley. Resthaven was and remains Shawnee's only funeral home with an on-site cemetery.

The Wileys' hard work and dedication to serving the community established Resthaven as the premier funeral home in Pottawatomie County. In 2001, the Shawnee Chamber of Commerce honored the legacy of the Wileys by establishing the annual “Neill and Mary Wiley Award,” which recognizes an outstanding volunteer in the community. In 2006, Resthaven merged with Gaskill-Owens Funeral Home. Many pieces of Gaskill-Owens' antique furniture, paintings, and other memorabilia were moved to Resthaven and are on display in our remodeled family gathering room. Gaskill-Owens' ledger books dating back to the 1920s are among the most interesting artifacts.

Over the last 80 years, Resthaven, nicknamed the “Cemetery Beautiful.” has grown to over 33 acres, with 11 acres undeveloped. Resthaven Memorial Park offers Shawnee's newest mausoleum facility, a gorgeous above-ground granite structure. It also offers cremation gardens and niches, lawn crypt gardens and a special veterans garden with a striking granite veterans memorial. Every Memorial Day, a large celebration takes place at Resthaven's own Veterans Wall, which is Shawnee's version of the Vietnam Veterans Memorial in Washington, D.C. Resthaven Funeral Home and Memorial Park offer immaculately groomed gardens in a peaceful setting just east of Shawnee at 5001 E. Highland.
