History of Resthaven Mortuary
Resthaven Gardens of Memory was established in 1958 in a wheat field on the west side of Wichita by Hap Bledsoe, allowing only flush-to-the-ground bronze markers. The cemetery contains many gardens with a main feature to express each garden’s theme. These features include artwork that is known throughout the Midwest. Many of the older gardens focus on a religious theme; the newer gardens include a veterans garden and rose garden.
Renovated to include a newly designed entrance as well as showcase our artwork and bronze collection, Resthaven Mortuary was built in 1970 on the southwest corner of the cemetery, making us the first combination mortuary and cemetery in the state of Kansas. The building has been renovated to include a newly designed entrance and expanded viewing rooms and offices. The expansion has helped accommodate the nearly 500 funerals a year we handle at our facility.
For more than 50 years, Resthaven Gardens of Memory has been the site of the largest Memorial Day service in Kansas. Each Memorial Day, thousands of people come out to honor those who have served our country and those who have gone before us. This service is highlighted by flyovers, bands, honor guards and high-ranking political and military speakers. Resthaven is a proud member of the Dignity Memorial® network of funeral, cremation and cemetery service providers. We are committed to exceeding expectations and delivering a standard of service that is 100 percent guaranteed.
