Ridout’s-Brown-Service, Inc. began in 1928 when Mr. Rufus M. Lackey founded Service Insurance Company in Anniston, Alabama. In 1933, the Service Insurance Company moved to Birmingham and merged with Brown Burial Insurance Company and became known as Brown Service Insurance Company. In December 1943, the Lackey family sold the company to Liberty National Life Insurance Company, but continued to operate twelve funeral homes in Alabama.
In 1947, Ridout’s-Brown-Service, Inc. began expanding in order to better serve the people of Alabama. The following is a list of the Ridout’s-Brown-Service properties that were acquired by an affiliate of Service Corporation International in 1996:
