History of Roselawn Funeral Home & Memorial Gardens

The history of Roselawn Funeral Home & Memorial Gardens began when Edwin Phillips and his brother, Dayton, purchased land along the Nashville Highway between Murfreesboro and Smyrna.

Murfreesboro in the early 1950s had a city-owned cemetery and many church, family and small community cemeteries. The Phillips brothers designed their cemetery to only accommodate ground level memorials—a new approach to memorialization. At this time, most cemeteries allowed both upright and ground level memorials, with upright being the memorial of choice.

Rutherford County has long been known for the amount of limestone rock found just below its soil surface. The Phillips brothers didn’t like the thought of having to use explosives in their cemetery once burials began to take place. They decided to remove all ground rock to below the six-foot depth range and back fill the area with quality topsoil, eliminating the need for explosives and providing a high- quality sod ground cover.

The brothers built a modest-sized mausoleum, to see if this option was one families might like. It was well-received, and the mausoleum was expanded to accommodate even more families. The mausoleum features an informal chapel for committal service. The brothers also provided families the option of choosing pre-installed outer burial enclosures.

Priding themselves on the grounds’ appearance, the Phillips brothers always kept the cemetery well manicured and groomed. That same level of pride continues. Our staff would be privileged to provide you and your family a tour of our beautiful grounds and show you the many options that may be selected.
