History of The San Francisco COlumbarium

In 1895, The Columbarium was designed to complement a crematorium. When cremation and cemetery burials were banned by the city from 1902-1910, families were forced to transfer their beloved's remains elsewhere, making the Columbarium the only burial place within San Francisco’s city limits. Due to the city's restrictions, The Columbarium was left in disrepair, until 1980 when The Neptune Society of Northern California took stewardship and restored its original condition. In 2016 a funeral home was added to the property, expanding the services offered to families.
