History of Skyline Memorial Gardens Funeral Home

Originally known as Northwest Memorial Gardens, Skyline Memorial Gardens was established in 1952 by Fred Collins after he purchased the site from Corrine Barber. Mr. Collins retained the services of Max Fuller, a Kansas City landscape designer who designed many of the mid-century memorial parks in the United States. As the gardens were designed, Mr. Collins commissioned Carrara Marble statues to be carved by a Milan, Italy artist Guido Orlandi. Taking pride in these pristine gardens and statues, Mr. Collins personally helped install the Italian marble sculptures that are featured throughout the cemetery.

By 1962, Mr. Collins’ dream to build a funeral home, crematory and flower shop in combination with a cemetery became a reality, making Skyline Memorial Gardens and Funeral Home the first combination facility in Oregon. Mr. Collins owned and operated Skyline until his death in 1975, at which time the location was sold to a private individual and then sold again in 1985, becoming the Skyline Memorial Gardens and Funeral Home of today. In a brochure from the 1950’s, Mr. Collins expresses his perspective of the establishment of Skyline Memorial Gardens, “Memory itself is fleeting, and for those who stay, there is a way to memorialize… Skyline Memorial Gardens, dedicated to the Memory of Man.”

Today we have expanded upon Mr. Collins vision; Skyline Memorial Gardens now has 14 traditional gardens, three distinctive cremation areas, exclusive private estates, mausoleums and lawn crypts. We offer personalized life celebrations, funeral services, cremation options, memorialization, catering, event space and more at one of the most beautiful vistas in the Portland area.
