The Paul Mortuary was founded in 1904 by J.K Paul as J.K Paul Furniture and Undertaking Parlor on Lighthouse Avenue in Pacific Grove, California. In 1938 the current building was built at 390 Lighthouse Avenue. It has undergone several remodels over the years and still operates at the same location. In 1948, the Paul family built The Little Chapel-by-the-Sea Crematory on the grounds of the El Carmelo Cemetery in Pacific Grove, becoming the first crematory on the central coast in California.
The Paul family operated the mortuary until 1978 when they sold the business to long-time employees David Dormedy and Ronald Siebe. Mr. Dormedy and Mr. Siebe continued to grow the business under their ownership, serving more families every year than all other peninsula mortuaries combined. In 1998 they decided to affiliate the mortuary with the Keystone Group. Though Mr. Dormedy and Mr. Siebe retired during this transition, Mr. Siebe remained and continued to manage the firm. He retired from day-to-day operation of the funeral home a few years ago but still meets families and manages the Little Chapel by-the-Sea Crematory.
In March 2010 the Keystone Group was acquired by Service Corporation International, and The Paul Mortuary became affiliated with the Dignity Memorial® group of funeral homes. Though much as changed over the years, we are particularly proud of our fully licensed staff of trained professionals. Their years of service range from five to more than 45 years. Their involvement in our local communities, their ability to provide compassionate care to families at a most difficult time and their deep knowledge of funeral service are just a few of the reasons we are recognized as the premier funeral and cremation provider on the Monterey Peninsula.
Today, we are proud to be a member of the Dignity Memorial network of funeral, cremation and cemetery service providers. Dignity Memorial providers offer exclusive benefits, including National Transferability of Prearranged Services, the Bereavement Travel Program, the 24-Hour Compassion Helpline® and access to an acclaimed grief management library. As North America’s largest provider of funeral, cremation and cemetery services, the Dignity Memorial brand is your assurance of quality, value, caring service and exceptional customer satisfaction.
