History of Valhalla-Holten Funeral Home and Cremation Services

Valhalla-Holten Funeral Home was established with a commitment to tradition, honor and integrity. We opened in 1996 on the grounds of Valhalla Gardens of Memory, located in Belleville, Illinois. Adding our beautiful, spacious funeral home created the first full-service funeral home, cemetery and cremation operation in Belleville.

In 2002, Belleville's Holten Funeral Home merged with our location to better serve all families, thus creating the Valhalla-Holten Funeral Home. The Holten Funeral Home had a long, rich tradition in the Metro-East area. Originally operated in East St. Louis, it was founded in 1959 by J. Dewey Holten (grandson to then State Senator Frank Holten) and operated an ambulance service as another way to serve the community. In 1972, Mr. Holten moved to a new location on West Main Street in Belleville where he continued to operate until the merger.

In 2009, Mr. Holten was recognized for being a licensed funeral director in the state of Illinois for 60 years. In 2008, the Pete Gaerdner Funeral Home (located on Lebanon Avenue in Belleville) became part of the Valhalla-Holten Funeral Home, creating a firm with more than 135 years of service to the metro area. Pete Gaerdner originated his funeral home in 1929, which served Belleville proudly as a funeral home and ambulance service. Following in his father's footsteps, Mr. Gaerdner's son, Pete Jr., ran the business for many years. We are proud to have many members of the Gaerdner Funeral Home staff still serving families at the Valhalla-Holten Funeral Home today.

We are proud of the heritage that these pillars of funeral service have passed on to us. Their commitment to serving the community with dignity, grace, and compassion are the same standards that guide us as we care for families both today and in the years to come.
