The Vancouver Funeral Chapel was established in 1929 by brothers John & Charles Kirch. Together they purchased the home of a prominent Vancouver banker, Hugh Phillips, who had built the original home in 1905. In 1936 the Kirch Funeral Home was sold to Ronald & Florine DuFresne in partnership with Hazel A. Smith, one of the first female funeral directors in the state. It then became the Vancouver Funeral Chapel.
