Westhampton Memorial Park was founded in September 1954 by internationally-known landscape architect, Carlisle C. Butler. Mr. Butler was born in Richmond and was a lifelong resident of the metro area. He was assisted at Westhampton Memorial Park by his wife, Doris Newton Butler.
Mr. Butler and his wife created a master plan for the park that was believed to be unparalleled in cemetery history—the creation and development of beautiful memorial gardens that depicted the history of the Christian faith in chronological order, beginning with the bible in the Garden of the Word. The story that these gardens tell lives on today as a shrine of perpetual loveliness dedicated to the sacred memories of loved ones passed.
The features that tell this story were carved from the same quarry that Michelangelo used to carve his famous statue, David.
