About

James B. Earthman Sr. began Earthman Funeral Directors in 1889 with a commitment to a high standard of service. Throughout our 125-plus-year history, we’ve continued to lead and innovate while maintaining that standard.

In 1981, we opened Earthman Funeral Directors - Hunters Creek. Conveniently located off Houston's Katy Freeway, our Hunters Creek funeral home continues to uphold our founder's heritage and commitment to providing Houston-area families the finest funeral and cremation services.

A modern funeral home

Our contemporary funeral home has an on-site chapel and plenty of room for gathering with friends and family. Should you wish to host coffee and tea, wine and cheese or even lunch or dinner, we can handle food and beverage catering. Because we know that each life is different and every family is unique, our funeral home team is trained to listen carefully and help you design a personalized funeral or memorial service.

Personalized funerals

At Earthman Funeral Directors - Hunters Creek, we pride ourselves on events that truly celebrate you or your loved one. Whether you are seeking a cremation with a Champagne toast, a full traditional funeral service with a catered reception or a creative celebration complete with a live band, favorite foods, a full bar and funeral favors, we take care of every detail. We are here to help you and your family celebrate a life like no other.

From scrapbooking to sailboats, guitars to golf balls, Texas barbecue to Texas bluebonnets, we take the things that mattered to someone and string them together to create a singular, heartfelt memorial.

Comfort and value

As a member of the Dignity Memorial® network, Earthman Funeral Directors - Hunters Creek gives you not only the warm, familiar attention you expect from a locally-operated business but also the value you deserve by way of the largest network of funeral, cremation and cemetery service providers in North America.

We are here for you.

History

James Bradshaw Earthman Sr. was a blacksmith and livery service provider in Taylor, Texas. The town of Taylor purchased a horse-drawn hearse, and as proprietor of the livery stable, James was frequently asked by the townspeople to assist with their funeral needs. Beginning in 1889, providing funeral services became James's full-time profession.

In 1904, James and his friend, railroad surveyor J.C. McCarty, moved to Houston and established the Earthman and McCarty Undertaking Company at 715 Main Street. The company prospered and, in 1924, moved to 2420 Fannin Street. After Mr. McCarty’s death, the company became J.B. Earthman Company.

A successful family business

After James' death in 1931, his son, James B. "J.B." Earthman Jr., a graduate of St. Thomas High School and Rice University, left his successful architectural career to manage the company. His wife, Blanche Bastien Earthman, assisted with the daily operation of the business and was one of the first women in Texas to become a licensed funeral director.

J.B. was a pioneer in funeral planning, founding a burial insurance company in the 1930s. Together, J.B. and Blanche built Earthman Funeral Directors & Cemeteries into one of the largest family-owned and operated funeral companies in the United States. Their children and grandchildren continued to manage and expand the business, adding new locations throughout the community.

Earthman Funeral Directors - Hunters Creek opened in 1981.
