Jerry Franklin Helms

Jerry Franklin Helms, 71, of Athens, passed away Wednesday, October 6, 2021.

Born in Charlotte, North Carolina, he was the son of the late Robert Williamson and Ola Crump Helms.

Jerry was a United States Navy veteran and was a member of the New Covenant Worship Center in Athens. Jerry completed his Navy career at Navy Supply Corps School, Athens, Georgia, transitioned as a Federal Employee and retired upon base closure. He owned and operated Jerry Helms Lawn Service.

In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his siblings, Robert Rae Helms, III., Terry Allen Helms and Judy E. Helms.

Survivors include his wife, Mary Sanders Helms; three sons, Matthew Helms, Johnny Helms and Nakomaa Helms; sisters, Jean Cason, Carrey Helms Johnson and Rebecca Helms; stepmother, Patricia Hogan Helms; step-sister, Terri Holden; step-brother, Patrick Perkins; two granddaughters, Kaylee Helms and Kensleigh Helms.

A celebration of Jerry’s life will be 1 p.m., Saturday, October 16, 2021, at the New Covenant Worship Center with Pastor David Hutchinson officiating.

My heart felt sympathy to the family of Jerry Helms. He was a coworker at the Navy Supply Corp School. I always enjoyed his company and friendship, including his wife, Mary. We had many laughs together. May God be a comfort to you.

Jerry was a great friend and a cherished member of the New Covenant Worship Center family. I celebrate with him as he is enjoying the best day of his life in Glory. Our prayers are with the family.
