Larry was born to Leonel (Lee) and Olivia Acevedo in McAllen, Texas in 1957. He was a lover of music, with a beautiful tenor voice, who was active in his high school’s choir and band. During the summer months of high school, he earned leading roles in musicals and melodramas with the Valley International Players. Larry graduated from McAllen High School and went on to attend the University of Texas at Austin where he obtained a BS in Biology. A short stint in dental school in Houston steered him away from a career of drilling and filling to a lifelong career in the Child Support Division of the Office of the Texas Attorney General. For over 35 years, Larry provided vision and support to the department as well as excellent customer service to its clients. His comprehensive knowledge, amazing leadership and his ability to work closely with and inspire others eventually led to his becoming the Director of the Child Support Training Team in 2004. In 2018, he was recognized as the Manager of the Year for his outstanding service to the department. Larry retired from the Attorney General’s Office in August of 2019.
Larry will always be remembered for his compassion, kindness, energy, sense of humor and quick wit. He was naturally creative and derived joy in sharing his talents with those around him. He was an avid gardener with the incredible ability to make things grow in the rocky Austin soil. He would often share seedlings and his horticultural knowledge with others.
Larry had a gift for planning, organizing and uniting his neighbors in the Austin West Branch Subdivision, where he was well known for his many themed block parties and progressive dinners. Larry and his spouse, Bill, will be fondly remembered by all the children and adults for their annual Halloween decorations and incredible Christmas displays that seemed to get larger every year. They always had the best Christmas house in West Branch, and it took many hours and days each year to create these displays. Larry also made sure that all the children’s letters left in Santa’s mailbox were delivered to the North Pole and were answered. Larry was a shining star in West Branch and will be missed by all who knew him.
Larry is survived by his spouse Bill Stuart, his parents Leonel (Lee) and Olivia Acevedo, his siblings Dr. Lee Acevedo Jr. (Hannah), Linda Mendez (David), Lisa Diaz (David), his nephews Lee Mendez, Michael Diaz, and his nieces Libby Mendez and Dee Dee Diaz.
We would like to extend our deepest gratitude to the wonderful medical staff at Ascension Seton Medical Center who cared for and were there for Larry when the Coronavirus would not allow his family and friends to be with him. A celebration of his life is being planned for a later time when we can once again gather. Donations may be made in Larry’s name to the charity of your choice.
Larry, you are greatly missed, and we all have a large hole in our hearts that will take a long time to heal. Thank you for being such joy and happiness to us all. We love you, and we will always cherish our memories of you.
“When this you see, remember me.”
