

Dr. John Bennett, 84, of Collierville, passed away at his home Friday, March 14, 2012. He was a graduate of Bethel College in McKenzie, Tennessee, received a Master’s Degree in English from Peabody College in Nashville and a Doctorate in Dental Surgery from the University of Tennessee in 1957. He practiced dentistry in Memphis until his retirement in 1989. He was a member of the American Dental Association. A Rotarian since 1980, he was a member of the Rotary Club South (now Memphis Central ) and served as president and many other positions. He had the distinction of being the only Rotarian to serve District 6800 as Governor twice, once 1990-91 and then again in ‘94-’95. He served Rotary International in many capacities as well in the 3-H Program, Preserve Planet Earth and Chairman of the District’s Group Study Exchange program and often served as the President’s Representative to District Conferences around the Southeast. He was a Paul Harris Fellow, Benefactor and endowed an Ambassadorial Scholarship for the Rotary Foundation. He is survived by his wife, the former Edna Hatcher of Greenfield, TN. Together they traveled the world on many adventures. He made friends around the world as a ham radio operator and continued them via the internet. Memorials may be sent to St. Andrews Episcopal Church in Collierville, where he was a communicant. Visitation will be held at 9:30 a.m. at Collierville Funeral Home with services to follow at 10 a.m. Interment will be in Greenfield, TN.
