Martha Virginia Hawkinson, 95, of Broomfield, CO, died Friday, June 26, 2020, at Legend Assisted Living Facility in Broomfield. An urn interment ceremony at Memorial Gardens Cemetery in Colorado Springs will be held in July for the immediate family. Pastor Dan Holt will officiate. Memorials are suggested to Ascension Lutheran Church, 2505 N. Circle Drive, Colorado Springs, CO 80909.
Martha was born September 15, 1924, in Orient, SD, to William and Hannah Anderson. Her parents had emigrated from Sweden prior to their marriage. They had nine children, five sons and four daughters with Martha as the middle child. Her parents moved to a farm in Redfield, SD, in 1938. Martha was confirmed in 1939 at Our Savior’s Lutheran Church and graduated from Redfield High School in 1942. In order to attend high school, she stayed in town during the week, returning home on the weekends. Martha had taken shorthand and typing classes in high school, so she used these skills to work for one year in Faulkton, SD. She moved to Minneapolis in 1944, and continued her career working for various firms including Honeywell. She updated her skills by taking bookkeeping classes.
Martha met Adrian Hawkinson, who was attending Dunwoody College in Minneapolis, in 1949. They were married on September 2, 1950, at Our Savior’s Lutheran Church in Redfield. They lived in Minneapolis for a year, moved to Lindstrom, MN, for a year, and then moved to North Branch, MN. Martha set up housekeeping, and Adrian started a construction company. They had three children: Cassandra, Christine, and Steven.
Martha and Adrian and their three children moved to Colorado Springs, CO, in late 1969. Martha worked as a bookkeeper while Adrian became a building supervisor for a construction company. Martha and Adrian made two temporary year-long moves to Phoenix so that Adrian could manage some building projects there. They participated in several hobbies together: bowling, playing bridge, doing crossword puzzles, and dancing. Martha also enjoyed knitting, puzzles, and cooking for family and friends. Martha and Adrian were active members of Ascension Lutheran Church and Sons of Norway. Traveling became a very important part of their retirement years. Adrian passed away in January of 2004. In 2013 Martha moved to Broomfield, CO. She enjoyed people and made new friends wherever she lived.
Martha is survived by two daughters: Cassandra Lewis of Broomfield, CO, and Christine Hawkinson of Lakewood, CO; one brother Lennart Anderson and one sister Ruth Jessen, both of Redfield; four grandchildren: Erin (Jonathan Fitt) Lewis and Jeffrey Lewis, both in Broomfield; Michael Hawkinson and Andrew (Nicole) Hawkinson, both in Colorado Springs; three great-grandchildren: Evelyn, Nicholas, and Kai Lewis-Fitt; daughter-in-law Barbara Hawkinson (Steven’s wife); and many nieces and nephews.
Martha was preceded in death by her loving husband Adrian, her son Steven, her brothers Carl, Philip, Paul, and Wallace, and her sisters Helen and Eleanor.
