The family will receive friends at 10:00 AM Friday, January 21, 2022 followed by a memorial service to celebrate Mrs. Burgy’s life at 11:00 AM in Edgewood Hall, Striffler-Hamby Mortuary, Columbus, GA. The Reverend Gail Gentry will be officiating. Inurnment will follow at Main Post Cemetery, Ft. Benning, GA.
Mrs. Burgy was born March 26, 1932 in Kawasaki, Japan, daughter of the late Yasuo and Hamano Ohtsu Uehara. She moved to Columbus, GA with her husband, the late Floyd E. Burgy in 1964. She raised her three children while her husband served in Vietnam and Korea. Mrs. Burgy was very involved in her children’s sports activities, school events, and was sure to have them in church every Sunday. She was best known for her generosity and willingness to help anyone in need.
After 34 years, Mrs. Burgy returned to Japan to reconnect with her family. This was very special to her becoming a yearly trip for visits that were shared with her children and grandchildren.
Mrs. Burgy is survived by three children, Catheren Gill and her husband, Ray, Hamano Ross and her husband, Darren, and Floyd “Buddy” Burgy; one brother, Kunio Uehara of Hiroshima Japan; two sisters-in-law, Kazue Uehara and Kayoko Uehara, both of Kawasaki Japan; three grandchildren, Mary Makayla Burgy, and River and Wyatt Ross; numerous nieces and nephews in Japan.
