Shirley Louise Gilroy

We are saddened to announce the death of Shirley Louise Gilroy (Daniels) of Dartmouth, N.S. who passed away on the 26th April 2021 at the age of 92 at Oakwood Nursing Home, Dartmouth.

Born in Lunenburg on December 10, 1928 she was the daughter of the late Wallace and Lottie (Schnare) Daniels. She was a graduate of the Lunenburg Academy and taught in a one room school in Garden Lots with classes Primary to seven for two years. She attended the Provincial Normal College in Truro and accepted a teaching position on the staff of the Dartmouth city schools where she taught for twenty years.

In 1955 she married Roy Gilroy in St. John’s Anglican Church, Lunenburg. All her married life she was an active member of Stairs Memorial United Church where she was a Sunday school teacher and Superintendent, a life-member and president of the United Church Women, a member of the Stewards and Unified Board and church historian. In this position she authored the church history titled, Through Thick and Thin and a sequel, Looking Backward, Moving Forward. She also was co editor of the church news letter, Inside Stairs. She was a primary and life member of the Fairfield Chapter IODE for fifty years where she held many executive positions including treasurer, regent and historian. She had also been on the executive of the Provincial Chapter IODE. For many years she was a member and volunteer of the Dartmouth Seniors Service Centre.

She and Roy enjoyed travelling to foreign places such as Greece, Russia, Norway, Hawaii. They spent many winters in Port Richey, Florida. When she retired from a busy life, she took up painting and writing as interesting hobbys. She wrote and illustrated many short stories to entertain her grandchildren and her close friends.

Besides her husband, she is survived by her daughter, Annette (Bill), Dartmouth and sons, Richard(Donna), Tatamagouche, Michael (Pamela), Greenfield, Daniel (Kelly), Wainwright Alberta, sister, Ivy Ernst, Mahone Bay, 13 grandchildren and 14 great grandchildren. She was pre deceased by her sister Ruth Winters. Cremation has taken place.

Thanks to all the staff at Oakwood Nursing Home for the great care.

Due to Covid 19 restrictions, funeral services will be held at a later date. Donations may be made to Stairs Memorial United Church Memorial Fund or any charity. A private burial will take place in Rodney, N.S. at a later date.

I was so saddened to hear of Shirley’s passing. Wow. Time goes by and she did such amazing things in her life. Alan Kenney sent me the obit tonight. Ian and I pass on our sincere condolences. I remember the boxing day dinners at 94 Russell with the pet rabbit running around the house. Thank you to Roy and Shirley and Annette for being important for our wedding 41 years ago. We have lots of great memories with Shirley. Please take our love and sympathies. Ian and I are in New Glasgow, Ottawa, and Blandford these days. With COVID we are primarily in New Glasgow.
