On May 14, 2020, Don Good, loving husband of Margaret Dickson Good, and father of 5 children, passed away peacefully at home with daughter Peggy close by. Don would have celebrated his 98th Birthday June 1.
Don was born in Yuma County, Colorado on his grandfather’s farm to Grace Dixon Good and John E. Good. Don graduated from South HS in Denver and then attended University of Colorado before transferring to Denver University. Don joined the US Air force in 1943, He became a fighter pilot and his plane was shot down over Germany. He was captured and became a prisoner of war on November 20, 1944. Don was liberated when WWII ended and he returned to Denver. He retired as a Major in 1962.
Don earned his Bachelor’s Degree in Education at Denver University. He started teaching with Denver Public Schools in 1946 at Colfax Elementary School. He met Margaret Dickson while she was attending Denver University. They married March 14, 1947. They would move to southwest Denver and raise their 5 children. When Schenck Elementary opened up in southwest Denver, Don transferred there to be closer to home. He remained at that school until he retired in 1982.
Don was a voracious reader and passionate about teaching and sharing his knowledge with others. He had the gift of a great memory for detail and the patience to share it. He never met a stranger and enjoyed talking to all who wanted to listen. After the children left home, Don and Margaret were able to spend more time traveling. They traveled the US seeing family, friends, and all the sights in between. They enjoyed cruises to multiple ports, and they took many different excursions to major cities in multiple countries. They learned about people and their cultures, and they made lots of new friends. They made a lifetime of memories and Don continued to share them until the end. When not traveling you would find Don skiing, golfing or working in the yard at St. Phillip and St James Church. Don’s vision problems eventually won out and he had to find other things to do. Don was an inspiration to all. He never gave up, he demonstrated his strong will to live in multiple ways and he always had a smile and kind words for those around him.
Don was especially loved by his children and grandchildren. He was a mentor to them all. He was strong with his faith and loving to his family. He was the go-to with all problems. Children and grandchildren alike have stories they share about how he counseled them with their problems and how he helped celebrate their successes. His hugs and smiles were appreciated by all!
