Higinio Mejia Camacho, 104, from Sacramento, Ca. passed away peacefully on June 30, 2019 surrounded by his children. He was born in San Fransisco, Epungio Mich., Mex. the youngest of three sons. Proceeded in death by his loving wife of 75yrs. Carmen Camacho Reyes, 92, on May 27, 2014. They were married June 24, 1940 in Acambaro, Gto., Mex. He always strived to do better. In his life time he traveled to many Cities in Mexico, and in the States as well. He worked in the Silver/Gold mines as a miner; Shoe salesman: In the early forties he participated in the Bracero Program; Southern Pacific Railroad; worked many years for Teichert Const., and retired from the City of Sacramento.
Carmen was the eldest of 16 children. In her youth when the Mexican Govt. closed all private and Catholic schools she taught the local neighborhood children to read for 10 cents a week. Her Father owned a small Grocery store and she was always by his side helping.
When Higinio left for the States working for the Bracero Prog., she subsidized her income with a Gelatin business using a recipe given to her by her mother. She was a homemaker, and went to school to learn English. In her later years she taught herself to paint in Oils on canvas. Many of her paintings were gifted to friends and family. One of her proudest moments was when she was commissioned to paint Murals in churches with Higinio as her assistant. Carmen loved gardening and tending to her Roses. She always believed in school and education.
They Immigrated and settled in Sacramento, Calif. in 1963. They raised and are survived by their 6 children Ruben (Martha), Magdalena (Jim preceded), Maria, Laura, Ana (Piet), Theresita, 9 Grand-children, 18 Great-grand-children, and leave many loved nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.
Both were members of The Sacramento Chapter of the Salvation Army. They loved their adopted country, and always felt blessed and fortunate. Both were guided by their Faith in God. Higinio and Carmen were here. They were loved. They set an example and made a difference.
A memorial service for Higinio will be held Tuesday, July 30, 2019 from 10:00 AM to 12:00 PM at Mount Vernon Memorial Park, 8201 Greenback Ln, Fair Oaks, CA 95628. A burial will occur at St. Marys Cemetery, 6700 21ST AVE, SACRAMENTO, California 95820-5951.
