

John Phillip Wetzel, age 69, of Southside, Alabama, passed away on May 22, 2026. He was born to the late Ralph Wetzel and Patricia Denson Hamilton. He was also preceded in death by his brother, Scott Wetzel, and his grandparents, Ed and Mary Denson.
John was a 1976 graduate of Etowah High School and dedicated over 40 years of service to Siberton Fence Company. He was an avid Auburn fan who loved all sports and enjoyed spending his time golfing, fishing, and watching television. John especially loved his dogs, Pip and Marly, and treasured the simple joys of life spent with family and friends.
He is survived by his wife, Shyrie Wetzel; children, Amanda Travis (Chris), Anastasia Schwenk (Freddy), and Jordan Wetzel (fiancé Kenny Gray); brother, Matthew Wetzel; sister, Mary Maddox (Mike); grandchildren, Jaxson Whitten (Maddie Lanette), Loren McCarley, Avery Schwenk, and Elliott Schwenk; nieces, Morgan Marbut (Josh) and Mackenzie Simpson (Trent); as well as special friends, Tim Shelton, Gene Proctor, and Lea and Anthony Henson.
Funeral services for John Phillip Wetzel will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Tuesday, May 26, 2026, at Collier-Butler Funeral Home with Josh Redden officiating. Burial will follow at Rainbow Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends from 12:00 p.m. until the hour of service Tuesday at the funeral home.
Pallbearers will be Jaxson Whitten, David Whitten, Gene Proctor, Donnie Redden, Scott Campbell, and Cristino Herrera. Honorary pallbearers will be Gene Paul Proctor and the employees of Siberton Fence Company.
The family would like to extend special thanks to Dickie Rome, Dr. B.J. Patel, and the staff of Riverview Regional Medical Center for their care and compassion shown to John and his family during his illness.
