Cotie, Alice (nee MacNeil) age 96 of Halifax, N.S. passed away March 10, 2018 at Northwood Manor, Halifax. Born in Mabou, Cape Breton, N.S. on August 27th, 1921. She was the daughter of William and Letitia (nee Day) MacNeil (born Brighton, England).Alice attended the St. Joseph Convent and remained a lifelong devout member of the Catholic faith. She was a fixture at Canadian Martyrs Catholic church in Halifax. A skilled seamstress, Alice worked making uniforms for the troops during WWII.
Alice spent 75 happy years married to the love of her life, Daniel Cotie, a fellow Cape Bretoner, also recently deceased. She was a devoted Mother known as much for her fabulous cooking and baking as she was for her quick wit and razor-sharp sarcasm. She embodied all the qualities one imagines when we think of a loving Wife and Mother. An adoring Grandmother, Alice loved nothing more than knitting a pair of colourful socks or sneaking a favourite sweet treat to one of her grandkids.
She is survived by sisters, Flo MacNeil, Catherine MacNeil, Anne Tisseman and her brother, Bill MacNeil.
Her three daughters, Elaine Cotie-Melanson, Dartmouth, NS; Heather Cotie, Halifax, NS and Susan Cotie, Halifax, NS. Two sons, Robert Cotie, Toronto, Ont. and David Cotie, Halifax, NS. Four grandchildren, Kassi Ellis, Toronto, Ont., living Wellington; Telford and Wrekin, UK; Jessica Melanson, Dartmouth; Taylor Cotie-Mullenger, Halifax and Madeline Cotie-Mullenger, Halifax. Two great-grandchildren, Freya Ellis and Joseph Ellis. Many nieces, nephews, grand-nieces and grand-nephews.
Alice is predeceased by her husband of 75 years, Daniel Cotie, Halifax; her son, Gary David Cotie, Halifax (aged 11); sisters, Mary Ann Spears, Veronica Beaton and Peggy Stephenson; brothers, Charlie MacNeil, Jim MacNeil, George MacNeil and Neil MacNeil.
A Celebration of Life will be held Sunday, March 18th, 2:00 pm J.A. Snow Funeral Home, 339 Lacewood Dr. Halifax NS. Cremation has already taken place. There will be a private family burial to follow at a later date. In lieu of flowers please consider a donation to The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society of Canada. The family would like to the wonderful caring staff of 8 Center, Northwood.
