Surrounded by his loving family, passed away peacefully at the Hants Community Hospital on Tuesday, July 17,2018, following a lengthy illness. The son of the late Lawrence and Corrine (Dorey) Kelly, he was pre-deceased by his brother, Granville. He is survived by his devoted wife of fourty-seven years, Pat (Merlin); daughter, Carla (Jason) Purdy; grandchildren, Alexander Jason "AJ", Callie and Josie, whom he adored; brother, Kenneth (Jeanette) Kelly, Lower Sackville; sister-in-law, Eileen (Ron) Comeau, Herring Cove; brother-in-law, Eddie (Elsie) Merlin, Halifax and sister-in-law, Joan (Sheridan) Kelly, Herring Cove and several nieces and nephews.
Remembered as a fun-loving character, he regaled all who knew him with his always entertaining story telling. An outstanding athlete, he was a graduate of St. Patrick’s High and attended Saint Mary’s University displaying his athletic talent in hockey and football. He was a member of Ashburn Golf Club, where he carried an eight handicap for many years. Along with wife Pat, he loved to travel and enjoyed many excursions to the Caribbean, Europe, and many parts of the United States.
His business acumen was shown with his founding and operation of the very successful Metro Security firm in the early ‘80s. With a staff of over one hundred, he held contracts with the Halifax Forum, the Metro Centre, Halifax Infirmary and many other Metro businesses. He always credited his father, a former police detective, with his help in operating the business in the early years.
He was a founding member and President of the Prospect Road Lions Club and a founding member of the Brookside Home Owners Association. Along with brother, Granville, and a small group of friends, he helped found the first Saint Mary’s University Golf Tournament at the Oakfield Golf and Country Club. This was followed by the development of the University’s Alumni Tournament played at the Chester Golf Club. His working days concluded when he was employed by the Nova Scotia Department of Justice in the Federal Court system.
He will be sadly missed by his Timberlea, Brookside and Queensland ‘families’ and wide circle of friends.
We celebrate the life of this wonderfully unique person who had so much to offer and enjoyed life to its fullest. Just a small look into the life of a great husband, father, grandfather and friend. The family will be ever thankful for the care and passion shown by the nurses and staff at Hants Community Hospital.
