Margaret was born in Halifax on September 10, 1928, to Thomas and Alberta Vaughan. She grew up in Halifax and spent her summers at the Vaughan family cottage in Musquodoboit Harbour.
After attending Queen Elizabeth High School and graduating from Mount Alison University, she worked at IBM in Halifax before meeting the love of her life Peter Jangaard. They married in 1956 and moved to Dartmouth where they raised their family, gardened, travelled, entertained, played bridge and continued the Musquodoboit Harbour tradition with their own cottage. Wonderful memories were made there with family and close friends. They moved to Halifax in 1985 and spent 30 happy years on Milsom Street before moving to the Berkeley Gladstone in 2017.
Margaret was a lifelong volunteer, active at the University Women’s Club, IODE, and serving for many years on the board of Victoria Hall. She was an accomplished bridge player attaining the rank of silver Life Master. She was a proud recipient of the Queen Elizabeth Jubilee Medal in 2012.
Margaret was the matriarch of the family and we will miss her radiant smile, kindness, graciousness, humour, companionship, extensive knowledge of flora and fauna, and subtle competitiveness. She embraced people, life and life’s events with enthusiasm and caring, her openness and inclusiveness towards all will continue to be an inspiration to family and friends as we move on.
Margaret is survived by her husband of 60 years, Peter; her children, Ingrid (Kevin Latimer), Chris (Krista), and Tom, all of Halifax; her grandchildren, Hugh, Anna, and Rose (Latimer), Kirsti and Tom (Jangaard), Ruby and George (Jangaard); niece, Elizabeth Burgess (Ian) and family (Fredericton); former daughter-in-law, Kim Farmer, and extended family in Norway.
She was predeceased by her brother, Tommy Vaughan; sister, Joan Forsyth; brother-in-law, George; nephew, Geordie Forsyth, and beloved grandson, Sam Jangaard. She was also predeceased by lifelong friend, Joan Rounsefell and her husband, Hank.
Our heartfelt thanks and gratitude go to the wonderful staff at the Berkeley Gladstone, and the caregivers who were so kind to Margaret and Peter over the last several months.
A celebration of life will be held on Monday, July 16 at 2:00 pm at JA Snow Funeral Home, 339 Lacewood Dr, Halifax. She will be laid to rest at the Musquodoboit Harbour Community Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, a donation may be made to the N.S. Nature Trust.
