

He was born October 21, 1926 in Dillsburg, PA, the son of the late Raymond and Bessie “Betty” Harbold Hoopes.
He was the first new teacher hired for the newly formed Northern York County School District while still a senior in college. He began his teaching career in a one-room school in Monaghan Township & then went on to teach math in grades nine through twelve at the old Dillsburg High School, the same school from which he graduated in 1944. He retired in 1986 after 36 years of service from Northern where he taught Mathematics for 13 years and later was a Guidance Counselor and Director of Guidance.
He attended the University of Pittsburgh; received a Bachelor of Science Degree in Mathematics from Elizabethtown College; and a Masters Degree in Counseling from Shippensburg University. He had been a Charter Member of the former Range End Country Club, was a member of St. Luke’s Episcopal Church in Mechanicsburg, PA, where he had been an usher, former member of the Property Committee, former Treasurer & formerly served on the Vestry.
He was a member of the Dillsburg Lions Club; the Mechanicsburg Club; Union County Sportsman Club; a life member of the Dillsburg Gun Club; a member of the Dillsburg American Legion Post #26; the Dillsburg VFW Post #6771; Northern York County Historical Society; the Dillsburg Senior Club; was a member of the National Retired Teachers Association and numerous Educational Organizations. He was a Veteran of World War II.
Surviving his are his wife, Lois Eichelberger Hoopes, who he adored; daughter, Kathleen “Kitty” Kroner and husband C. William of Mt. Airy, MD; sons, Rickalon “Rick” Hoopes and his wife Elizabeth of Bellefonte, PA and Thomas Hoopes of Dillsburg, PA; step-sister, Charlotte Rosenberger and husband Floyd of Dillsburg, PA; brother, James Paxton and wife Danice of North Carolina; one grandson, Andrew I. Fields and wife Christina Carlson Fields of Battleground, WA; granddaughter, Sarabeth R. Fields and husband Michael Westfort of Westborough, MA; step granddaughters, Kristie Kroner Edens & husband Matthew of Frederick, MD and Kamerine Kroner of Arizona; five great grandchildren, Noah Lamuela Fields, Carlson “Carly” Rae and Soren Fields of Battleground, WA, Eli and Miriam Westfort of Westborough, MA; step great grandsons, William Nathaniel & Edward Jackson Edens of Frederick, MD. Also surviving is a dear long time family friend, Bonnie Armstrong of Chincoteague, VA and her sons Justin of Albuquerque, NM, and Theodore and wife Brandalyn of Harrisburg.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, Lester E. Hoopes; sister, Barbara Hoopes Smith, and step-sister Martha Paxton Lerew
A memorial service will be held Saturday, January 17, 2015, 11:00 AM, at Saint Luke’s Episcopal Church, 8 East Keller St. Mechanicsburg, PA 17055.
