Joe will be missed.  He had love for youth and Asbury  and made time to show it. My favorite memory of Joe was him volunteering to drive the church bus,”Curbie”,  for AnneMarie’s  Girl Scout trip to Savannah, Ga and back. What a testament for his love for his granddaughter! His unselfish act touched the life of GS Troop 33 & and  we leaders forever. Several of the girls had never been fairer farther from home than Dallas.  He also helped guide Asbury for many years and we all owe him a huge debt of gratitude. Thank you Joe for your well-lived life of service.



One of my earliest memories of Mr. Joe was on an Asbury youth ski trip to Colorado back in the 90s when I was just in the second grade. Me and Mr. Joe "graduated" from ski school together that week, but somehow he was the one to mow down just about all of us on the slopes over the course of that trip! Mr. Joe & Mrs. Jean were one of my favorite things about growing up at Asbury. There are countless other stories shared together over the last 25+ years—from mission trips to the Navajo Nation and New Orleans, laughing at one of Mr. Joe's one-liner jokes he was always cracking, or just bumping into him on a quiet afternoon in the church halls as he reported for Silver Eagle duty. He had the best hugs and the warmest smile. He had a special way of always making it known that he was cheering us kids on. I will miss him dearly, but will always cherish those memories together and be grateful for his loving presence in my life. Sending all my love and prayers to Mrs. Jean and the whole Elgin family.

Mr. Joe was one of my favorite parts about going on our trip to the Navajo Nation! He was an adult leader in my group one year and I will never forget how thoughtful and kind he was to each of us. He helped us learn new skills and never got frustrated when we did something not quite right. I am thankful our lives crossed paths. I am thinking about him and his family.

I count being friends with Joe Elgin one of the great blessings and joys of my life. We shared life together in the church, in the choir, on mission trips with youth and working on my place in Maine. Many wonderful memories that make me smile fill my heart today. Joe was a true Christian who lived his faith every day in every way. I thank God for the good gift of Joe Elgin.
