James L. Thomas was born September 23.1936, in Madisonville TX, the youngest child of Gertie Flint & John Thomas. He died at home in Houston, Texas Friday, January 8,2A21, after a progressive decline due to Lewy Body Dementia.
Jim graduated from Madisonville High School in 1953 and was hired by Schlumberger Well Services in Houston. Schlumberger allowed him a leave of absence to join the US Air Force from 1955-1958. The USAF taught him computer skills which he brought back to Schlumberger working in their Computer Accounting section until his retirement in September 1986.
In September 2009, he was inspired to convert to Catholicism. He went to St Michael the Archangel Catholic Church the following day & signed on to take lessons, and on Easter Sunday, April 10, 2010, proudly became a member of the Catholic Church. His friend & sponsor, Lyn Salerno, was at his side.
He married Mary Ellen Waters on June 2,1962. He is survived by his wife, and their two sons, John William Thomas (Kathy Sellmeyer), and Steven Wayne Thomas. He thoroughly enjoyed being PaPa to five grandchildren: Danielle Marie (Al) Eidam, Whitney Rian (Eric) Bentley, Trevor Scott Thomas, Martha Caroline (Terry) Stevens, and U. S. Army Specialist 4 Travis James Thomas. He is also survived by Great-Grandchildren Mary Eidam, Helena Bentley, Joanna Stevens, Sean Bentley, Alyssa Bentley, and Evelyn Stevens, and new Baby Stevens due in April.

We are especially grateful to Jim's caregiver for over two years, Alesia Brown. Her devotion to Jim's well-being was never-wavering & she was a true blessing to Jim and his family. We also wish to recognize the amazing staff of Memorial Hermann, especially the Home Hospice team. They have been helpful & kind beyond words.

A kind and gentle man... that’s my memory of Jim. We only got to see the relatives from Houston occasionally growing up but in my memory, he and Mary Ellen were at every family gathering or beach party. We shared fried chicken and potato salad while the men played dominoes. Ahhhhh....those were the days. I’ve been blessed with a wonderful and loving extended family and Jim was a part of that.

Uncle Jim was one of my favorite Uncles. I have such fond childhood memories of visiting their home and playing with John and Steve. Such a good man, Uncle Jim was patient and kind while 7 children ran in and out of his house. I used to be so amazed at his gardening skills and love to look at his garden and hear about the plants he chose and why his garden produced much fruit. He was a great man inside and out in the truest sense of being a wonderful human. I know your family will miss you dearly, and we all look forward to seeing you again.. after all "oh death where is your sting"
