Frankie (Frank) E. Smith, 68 of Indianapolis passed away on August 16, 2019. He was born on November 25, 1950 in Jacksonville, Florida to Isaiah and Dorothy (Dean) Smith who both have preceded him. He was also preceded by his brother Mike Smith. Frank is survived by his wife Nina (Powers), his three children Larry, Jon and Kim (Johnny) Szydlowski and his five grandchildren Kayla, Peyton, Parker, Taylor and Harlan. He is also survived by two brothers: Guy (Sharon), Mark (Roberta) and three sisters Cathy (Bill) Brown, Vicky (Victor) Smith- Johnson and Penny (Mike) Snyder and many nieces and nephews.
Frank started his career in the Army on March 19, 1970 and retired on March 31, 1992. When he first entered the service he was in missile maintenance serving in Korea and in Huntsville Alabama and in August 1975 he decided to leave the Army. He went back into the Army in March 1976 and was in the finance department serving in Fort Huachuca, Arizona. He then decided to become an Army recruiter serving in Freeport, Illinois, Tucson, Arizona and Sierra Vista, Arizona. He was the station commander in Sierra Vista and his office was successful in their recruiting requirements. Upon his return to the finance department in 1983 he served in Korea, Fort McClellan, Alabama, Vincenza, Italy and finally Fort Benjamin Harrison, Indiana. During his time in Italy he had to go to Germany, Greece and Turkey. He retired as a Master Sergeant. After retiring from the Army he went directly working for the government as a civilian in Building 1 at Fort Benjamin Harrison, Indiana until he retired in 2009.
Frank was an avid bowler. He was the current President of the Monday Morning Senior Masters Championship League. He had several 300 games and one 800 series. He also enjoyed going to the movies. He was a Colts fan and had season tickets for several years. But his favorite pastime was spending time with his grandchildren. He loved taking them to the zoo, movies and out to eat. He would always attend any of their school functions, athletic events and anything else they participated in whenever possible. He also enjoyed surprising them by having lunch with them at school.
During his retirement years, he enjoyed traveling. Frank and Nina went to Hawaii, Alaska, to the Caribbean, the Panama Canal and just this year to France and England. He also took yearly trips to the Outer Banks, North Carolina and Jacksonville, Florida to visit family and friends.
Frank will be truly missed by his family and friends that interacted with him during his lifetime.
