Lewis received his education in the Madison County Public School System and enjoyed participating in basketball. As he grew older, his desire for farm living began to diminish. Lewis did enjoy horseback riding on Sunday evenings while visiting family and friends, but he had no desire for working in the fields. At the age of nineteen, Lewis asked his parents if he could live with his maternal grandmother and uncle in Jackson, Mississippi, and they agreed.
Lewis’ first day in Jackson, Mississippi he obtained a job working at Presto Manufacturing Company. During his time in Jackson, Mississippi, Lewis became a father to four children. After ten years of employment with Presto Manufacturing Company, they decide to downsize their company and Lewis then relocated to Indianapolis, IN. Lewis became employed in Indianapolis at IUPUI University Hospital and the Indianapolis International Airport. Lewis continued to work these jobs until he retired.
Lewis loved his family and friends. Lewis was a great expressive conversationalist who never felt uncomfortable about discussing anything, and he never agreed if he felt that your response was incorrect. Lewis will forever be remembered as an individual who was outspoken and never forgot to share his love or assistance with family members or friends who were in need.
Lewis was preceded in death by his mother, Luebirdia Walton Bennett, father, Fred Lee Bennett, sister, Louise Bennett Paris, and one great-grandchild
Lewis departed this life on May 8, 2021 and he will be missed dearly by all.
Lewis is survived by his sons, Jerome (Tracy) Bennett (Jackson, MS), Lewis Bennett Jr. (Norfolk, VA); daughters, Cassandra Bennett (Jackson, MS), Phyllis Ellington (Saulsberry, North Carolina); 10 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; brothers, Roy Lee Bennett (Ruth) (Jackson, MS) and Fred Lee Bennett Jr. (Mary) (Jackson, MS); sisters, Marguerite Bennett (Jackson, MS) and Demetriss Johnson (Eric) (Austell, GA); Fiancé, Bernette (Nette) Williams; a host of nieces and nephews, other relatives, and friends.
