She was born on April 17, 1951 in Carlisle, Pennsylvania to Lawrence and Mary Southern. Sandy was raised in Linden, Indiana and she graduated from Clinton Prairie High School in 1971. She earned her associate degree in business management from Ivy Tech in 1984. She married Thomas E. Landes on November 29, 1969, and together they had three children, Todd Landes (Angel Landes) of Chesterfield, MI, Robert Landes (April Landes) of Kokomo, IN, and Tawnya Meagher (Brian Meagher) of Frankfort, IN. Sandy was known best as the feisty lady with the purple hair, with an infectious laugh, and no matter the circumstance she always found a way to enjoy life and make the best out of anything that came her way.
Through the years of raising her children, Sandy was very proud of going back to school gaining her associate degree, making the Dean’s List all while working full time and raising her children. Once she finished school, she was proud to get and maintain a job with the new Wendy’s in town as the General Manager. Then she moved on to become the head cook at Lafayette National bank. Through the years Tom and Sandy, loved to travel with their family. Having many vocational trips, they decide to become a host family for foreign exchange students, and they hosted four students, which gave them a chance to go to Germany. They spent their 25th wedding anniversary in Jamaica. But Sandy’s favorite place to vacation was in the Smoky Mountains. Sandy loved watching nature at its best. She loved to feed the hummingbirds, squirrels, and even her stray cats, while sitting on her front porch with her many wind chimes blowing in the wind over her.
After her children were grown and married, she was blessed with grandchildren, which were her pride and joys in life: Jordan Guillen (Meghan), Jason Landes (My Boy), Jasmine Landes (Jazzy Girl), along with Lacy West, Emma Morgan, Ethan Morgan, Jocilyn Ottinger (Baby Girl), Casey Meagher and Kyle Meagher, and great-granddaughter, Emma Jo. Sandy loved all the kids, and all her many nieces and nephews. She spent many nights and days with them baking, talking and watching movies and passing down family traditions and recipes.
When Sandy’s health started to fail, she was blessed enough to have her sister, Susan Mcguire there to be her caregiver, making sure to take care of her and make sure her needs were met. She is survived by her siblings: Susan McGuire, Roger Southern, and Edward Southern. Preceding her in death were her parents, Lawrence and Mary Southern, siblings, David Southern, Lawrence Southern II, Angela Proctor, and Tina Sholly.
With the current state of restrictions, we will plan a celebration of life at a future date.
