Born and raised in Columbia North Carolina to Julian and Ethel Sawyer. She married her school sweetheart, Joseph Norcom, in 1946 after he returned from service in WWII. They were married just short of 73 years.
After a short stay in Columbia she and her husband moved to Jackson, Mississippi, to work for his brother-in-law owner of Magnolia Tree and Deviney Construction. She managed the household budget and thus was able care for her three children, furnish the house, and purchase a car with her husband’s earnings.
As stay at home mother she raised her three children (Mike, Kay, and Joey) through school and college, then baby sat her grandchildren. As a homemaker she had coffee with her neighbors and friends, loved being creative with ceramics, decoupage, interior decorating, cooking, entertaining, sewing, travelling and collecting cookbooks wherever she went.
She enjoyed travelling with her husband and family members to his WWII bomber group reunions in various cities and Air Force Bases.
Prior to her marriage she attended the Methodist Church while her future husband attended the Episcopal Church. After marriage they attended the Episcopal Church in Columbia, NC. When they moved to Jackson, Mississippi there was no local Episcopal Church. After an interval of time she decided to join Leavell Woods United Methodist Church. After watching her and the children go to the Methodist church, her husband decided to join her in attending. She loved the church and joined the Brilla Martin Circle ladies’ group. This ladies’ circle was very active in many aspects of church life. When she moved to her new home in Clinton, she continued to travel back to Leavell Woods for several years before joining First United Methodist Church of Clinton.
She was a loving wife and mother, grandmother, daughter, sister, and friend to many. She always made holidays special for her family with her decorating and cooking skills. She is survived by her husband, Joseph Norcom, son Michael (Carol) Norcom, son Joseph (Joey) Norcom, and daughter Kay (Andy) Anderson, grand children Andrew (Lindsay) Norcom, Sarah (Mike) Dixon, and great grandchildren Lillian Dixon and Chapman Dixon.
Visitation will be held at Lakewood Funeral Home on Thursday, August 8, 2019 from 5:00 to 7:00 PM. Funeral service will be held in the funeral home chapel on Friday at 11:00 AM with visitation one hour prior. Interment will follow at Lakewood Memorial Park.
